I like writing about space in the present tense, but as a timeless bystander observing the universe. It makes the pieces quite lonely and touching in nature, I find.
Although, if you're going for a more action-packed book, i'd definitely do it in present tense.
Not a lot of novels nowadays use past tense unless it's part of a flashback or such.
